Bezbozhko Lake

Bezbozhko Lake is one of the most picturesque and easily accessible glacial lakes in the Pirin Mountains. Situated at an altitude of 2239 m, it is located right next to Bezbog Hut. With an area of about 19 decares and a maximum depth of 7 m, it impresses with its crystal-clear waters and the majestic peaks surrounding it. The lake is an ideal spot for a short family outing as well as a starting point for longer mountain routes. During the summer months, tourists, photographers, and nature lovers flock here, drawn by the beautiful scenery, fresh air, and sense of tranquility.

How to get there

The starting point for reaching the lake is Gotse Delchev Hut, located about 12 km from Dobrinishte. It can be reached by car via an asphalt road, and there is free parking at the hut. From there, there are two main ways to reach Bezbog Lake:

Route

By chairlift: The chairlift departs from Gotse Delchev Hut and reaches Bezbog Hut in about 30 minutes. It operates during the summer months (June–September), and the price of a round-trip ticket is approximately BGN 25. This route is the easiest and most suitable for families with children and people with limited mobility.
On foot: For hiking enthusiasts, there is a green tourist trail that leads from Gotse Delchev Hut to Bezbog Hut. The path passes through forested areas and takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. The terrain is moderately difficult but offers beautiful views.
Bezbog Hut is located right on the shore of the lake and offers food and accommodation, but it is advisable to make a reservation in advance. During winter, access can be difficult, and the lake freezes over – it is not safe to walk on the ice.

What not to miss

Sunrise over the lake: If you're staying at Bezbog Hut, don't miss getting up early to watch the sunrise – as the sun appears behind Dzhano Peak, the lake waters glow golden and pink.
Spring flora: In May and June, the meadows around the lake are covered with crocuses, rhododendrons, and dandelions – a true paradise for photographers.
Mountain hikes: Routes to some of the most beautiful parts of Pirin start from the lake:
Bezbog Peak (approx. 1 hr 30 min)
Polezhan Peak (approx. 2 hrs)
Popovo Lake (approx. 2 hrs 15 min)
Fishing: Balkan trout live in the lake. Fishing is permitted with the appropriate license and in compliance with the rules of Pirin National Park.

Fun fact

According to a local legend, during the Ottoman rule, a group of Bulgarians took refuge in the mountains near today's lake. The Bashi-bazouks found them and carried out a bloody massacre. The blood of the dead stained the waters of the lake. The locals named it "Bezboshko" (Godless Lake) to commemorate the godless act of cruelty. Today, the place is quiet and beautiful, but the memory of the legend gives the lake a sense of depth and reverence.
