Krum's Bathtub Waterfall

Krumova Vana Waterfall is one of those places that combine natural beauty, legends, and easy access – ideal for a short but memorable adventure in the Eastern Balkan Mountains.

Introduction

Hidden in the heart of the Rishki Pass, Krumova Vana waterfall is a small but impressive natural phenomenon. About 4–5 meters high, it is formed by the Nemoy Dere River, which falls over rocks and forms a natural stone "tub." The place gets its name from the legend that Khan Krum bathed here after his victory over the Byzantines in 811 – a detail that gives the visit a special historical and emotional value.


How to get there

The waterfall is easily accessible – it is located only about 200 meters from the main Shumen – Karnobat road.

  • You can leave your car in a small widening by the road, near Krumov Most (Krum's Bridge).

  • From there, take a steep forest path that leads you to the gorge of Nemoy Dere in a few minutes.

  • The entire walk takes no more than 10–15 minutes, but it is good to wear comfortable shoes because the terrain is steep and slippery when wet.

  • The waterfall itself – in addition to the main drop, if you go a little further up, you will discover several more small rock pools and cascades.

  • The legend of Khan Krum – the place is not only a natural landmark but also a part of Bulgarian history.

  • The "Orlitsite" Protected Area – the area is rich in vegetation and offers a sense of a wild and untouched corner of the mountain.


How much time you will need

A visit can be short – about 30–40 minutes for a walk and photos. If you decide to enjoy the peace longer, have a picnic, or explore the surrounding rock formations, set aside at least 1–2 hours.

  • Orlitsa Peak (733 m) – offers panoramic views of the Shumen and Madara Plateaus. The hike is of moderate difficulty and can be combined with a visit to the waterfall.

  • Rishki Pass – the pass itself is picturesque and connected with important historical events.

  • Shumen – about 40 km away, where you can visit the Shumen Fortress and try local cuisine.

  • Karnobat – to the south, famous for its wines and cozy establishments.

  • For a bite to eat on the way: in the area of the pass, there are small roadside taverns and restaurants offering traditional dishes – a great opportunity to try homemade banitsa or kebapcheta after your walk.

  • It is best to visit the waterfall in spring or after rain, when the water flow is at its fullest.

  • Bring water and a small snack – the place is wild and has no amenities.

  • If you are a photography enthusiast, prepare for beautiful shots – especially in sunny weather, when the water sparkles on the rocks.
