Deultum – the ancient Roman city that preserves the history of Thrace

Deultum (Debelt) is one of the most significant archaeological complexes in Southeastern Bulgaria – a place where Thracians, Romans, and Byzantines left their mark. It is located about 17 km southwest of Burgas, near the village of Debelt, and offers a unique combination of history, nature, and tranquility. The site is easily accessible by car – along the Burgas–Sredets road, with signposts and convenient parking at the entrance.

The archaeological reserve includes remnants of a Roman city founded in 70 BC as a colony of veterans from the VIII Augustan Legion – the first Roman colony of its kind on the territory of modern-day Bulgaria. A walk through the ruins reveals parts of fortified walls, thermal baths, temples, residential areas, and important public buildings. Don't miss the museum at the entrance to the complex – small but extremely rich in artifacts, including coins, pottery, statues, and household items.

One of the most interesting areas is the sanctuary dedicated to Thracian deities, as well as the remains of the early Christian complex. The territory of Deultum is also part of the "Mandra-Poda" nature reserve, so rare birds and calm bodies of water can often be seen, making the place suitable for photography and nature lovers.
