Acre Fortress

Brief introduction: Akra Fortress is a unique historical site on the Southern Black Sea coast—an old Byzantine fortress nestled on Cape Akra near the town of Chernomorets, about 1.5–2 km northwest of its center. It carries centuries of history and offers an unforgettable journey through time.

Location and how to get there: The fortress is located on Cape Akra (GPS ≈ 42°27′29″ N, 27°37′40″ E), at an altitude of 27 m above sea level. It can be reached on foot or by car via a dirt but passable road—from the center of Chernomorets, the journey is about 1.5–2 km. Parking and an open area in front of the fortress allow for a convenient visit.

What not to miss: During your walk, explore a preserved section of the fortress wall—parts of it reach up to 4 m in height and over 2.4 m in thickness. A leading landmark is the rectangular tower located in the water—a testament to ancient ship harbors and maritime trade. The submerged structures below sea level, discovered during archaeological research, tell the story of a city that combined military function and a trading settlement.

History and significance: Akra is also known as an ancient port city and fortress, part of the antique network of coastal settlements around Apollonia Pontica. Archaeological excavations show that 2/3 of the settlement was on land, and 1/3 was below sea level, indicating a sunken city. During the Early Byzantine era, the fortress was important for defending the bay and maritime trade; later, due to rising sea levels and historical events, it was abandoned. Nevertheless, life in the area partially resumed during the Middle Ages.

Other interesting places in the area: If you are in Chernomorets or the surrounding area, you can combine your visit to Akra with beaches around the cape, as well as a trip to nearby Sozopol (about 7–8 km away), known for its ancient part, narrow streets, and maritime atmosphere. Boat trips, sunbathing, or diving around nearby islands and bays complement the experience.

Tips for visiting and a place to eat: To avoid the heat and have a more pleasant walk, I recommend coming in the morning or late afternoon. Chernomorets has several nice restaurants and eateries—ideal for lunch or dinner after visiting Akra, with seafood and a traditional atmosphere. It's a good idea to bring water and a light snack, as there are no establishments at the fortress itself.
