Monyak Fortress

Where is it?
Monyak Fortress is located about 10 kilometers east of Kardzhali, with the nearest populated place being the village of Shiroko Pole. If you are coming from Kardzhali in the direction of Shiroko Pole for the fortress, you should turn sharply right just before the turn-off for the village. There are signs. Continue by car for about 2 more kilometers until the beginning of the trail. There is an informative sign and a convenient parking spot next to it.
After about 10-15 minutes, you will pass by the remains of the Kula fortress, where the road will turn left and begin to descend. Next, there is a fork with a sign, where you take the right path. After another turn to the right, in just about ten minutes, you will find yourself at the temple-well.
What shouldn't we miss?
Besides the fortress wall, one of the first landmarks reached is the massive western gate and the tower next to it. The gate was barred in the past with a wooden beam. The hole where the beam entered can still be seen today. In the western part of the hill, other ruins can be seen, and further on towards the dam, the rope bridge to the village of Lisitsite is visible. There are no signs in the fortress, but a designated path leads to the eastern part of the hill, where the citadel was and where the triangulation point of Shesta Krepost peak is located. Beautiful panoramic views can also be enjoyed from there.
How long does it take
A visit to Moniak Fortress usually takes about 2 to 3 hours. This is enough time to enjoy a walk around the fortress, take some photos, and soak in the magic of the place. If you want to have a picnic or just relax, consider an additional hour or two to fully enjoy the nature.
Fun fact
According to local legends, a man named Stoyko lived in Moniak Fortress, known for his great courage and valor. Once, when an evil sorceress settled in the village, Stoyko decided to defeat her to free the people from her terror. His courage and cunning allowed him to deceive her and drive her out of the fortress, leaving behind only memories of extraordinary adventures and magical events. Is this true or just a legend?
