Ovech Fortress

Where is it?
The Ovech Fortress is located in the town of Provadia, about 50 km west of Varna. The road there is relatively easy – follow the main road Varna-Shumen and the turn-off to Provadia. In the town itself, there are signs that will direct you to the fortress. Preparing for a short hike is a good idea because Ovech is reached by steep stone stairs or by a picturesque bridge that connects the fortress to the cliffs.
What shouldn't we miss?
Don't miss the bridge over the rocks! The rock bridge leading to the fortress is extremely picturesque, and the view from it is indescribable. Inside the fortress itself, you will see the preserved remains of ancient churches, water reservoirs, and storage areas for provisions.
The view of Provadia from the top is also worth it – a true visual feast for photography lovers.
How long does it take
A visit to the fortress usually takes about an hour and a half to two hours. If you are passionate about history and want to explore every corner, allow a little more time. The path to the fortress itself has slightly challenging sections, so be prepared for a short but invigorating physical effort.
Fun fact
Legend has it that in the Middle Ages, Ovech was an important strategic outpost and home to boyars. One of them, the captivating boyar Boyan, had a secret exit that led to the river below. It is said that he could use this exit to sneak out of the fortress unnoticed and meet his beloved, hidden in the shadows of the night. Whether it's true or not, we leave to your imagination!
