Cromlech

The Dolni Glavanak Cromlech is one of the most enigmatic and impressive sites in Bulgaria – an ancient stone circle often called "the Bulgarian Stonehenge." A visit there is not only a journey back in time but also an encounter with the mystique of the Eastern Rhodopes.

Introduction

The cromlech is a megalithic cult structure – stone blocks arranged in a circle, which served for rituals and beliefs of the ancient Thracians. It was discovered in 1998 and is the only well-preserved cromlech in Bulgaria. Its diameter is about 10 meters, and the stone blocks are up to 1.5 meters high. The atmosphere of the place is peculiar – as if time has stopped and the stones hold secrets from millennia.

How to get there

The cromlech is located near the village of Dolni Glavanak, in Madzharovo Municipality, Haskovo region. From Haskovo, the road passes through Harmanli and Madzharovo. About 10 km after the Arda River, in the direction of Topolovo, you will see a turn-off to the forest. From there, a short path leads you to the cromlech itself. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes as the terrain is slightly uneven.
