The puddle
Nestled in the heart of the Balkan Mountains, Lake Lokvata is a true natural gem. Despite its modest size, it impresses with its beauty and solitude. Situated in a deep hollow between the peaks of Malyk Kupen and Golyama Kupen, the lake collects its waters from the surrounding snowdrifts and rainfall. During hot summers, it can even dry up completely, but this does not diminish its charm.
How to get there
This small and picturesque lake is not reached by chance – the journey requires an adventurous spirit, good physical fitness, and a love for nature. The route starts from the town of Sopot, passes through a lift, mountain trails, huts, and peaks, and finally leads to a truly wild and beautiful place where you will feel as if you have reached the top of the world.
Route
· Sopot Chairlift Station: The chairlift station is located on the northern side of the town and is accessible via a convenient paved road with available parking.
· Chairlift to the Intermediate Station: Take the chairlift, which will take you to the intermediate station.
· Hike to Dobrila Hut: From the intermediate station, continue north on foot along the trail to Dobrila Hut, marked with yellow markings. The distance is about 3.4 km with an ascent of over 480 meters elevation gain, which takes about 1-1.5 hours.
· From Dobrila Hut to Ambaritsa Peak: After a break at the hut, continue east along the red markings towards Ambaritsa Peak (2166 m). The trail starts from the eastern end of the hut's yard and takes about 1.5 hours to complete.
· From Ambaritsa Peak to Lokvata Lake: Continue east along the red markings, passing through the peaks of Mala Ambaritsa and Malak Kupen. After Malak Kupen, make a detour south from the red markings along a trail that descends from the western side of the lake. The distance from Ambaritsa Peak to the lake is about 3.4 km with over 200 meters elevation gain, taking about 1.5 hours.

According to local legends, Lokvata Lake is inhabited by ancient spirits who guard the mountain's secrets. It is said that only those with a pure heart and sincere intentions can reach the lake unhindered. Those who seek treasures or wish to cause harm are driven away or simply disappear without a trace.
