Momchil's Fortress

Momchilova Fortress is located near the village of Gradat, about 17–21 km east of Smolyan. It rises on a rocky peak with an altitude of 1215 meters, in the area of Gradishteto. This was once the domain of the legendary Momchil Voyvoda – a hero who fought for Bulgarian identity and left a lasting mark in national memory. The fortress was part of the Byzantine defensive system as early as the 6th century, and later – between the 11th and 14th centuries – it was fortified and used by local rulers.

  • From Smolyan, head towards the village of Gradat.

  • At the foot of the fortress, there is an information center and free parking.

  • From there, the route continues along a mountain path – about 20–30 minutes walk to the top.
