Momchilova Fortress is located near the village of Gradat, about 17β21 km east of Smolyan. It rises on a rocky peak with an altitude of 1215 meters, in the area of Gradishteto. This was once the domain of the legendary Momchil Voyvoda β a hero who fought for Bulgarian identity and left a lasting mark in national memory. The fortress was part of the Byzantine defensive system as early as the 6th century, and later β between the 11th and 14th centuries β it was fortified and used by local rulers.
