Simeon's Lakes
The most convenient starting point is the Simeonovo district in Sofia. From there, there are several options:
- By car: You can reach the Simeonovo – Aleko cable car area, where there are convenient parking spaces.
- By public transport: Bus lines from Sofia (such as 122 and 123) stop near the cable car.
- By cable car: If you want to combine your walk with high-altitude views, the cable car to Aleko is an excellent choice. From the upper station, the route to the lakes is easier and more scenic.
How to get there
The route from Simeonovo to the lakes is moderately easy and suitable for almost anyone who enjoys mountain hikes.
- Start: Simeonovo – Aleko Chairlift or its lower station.
- Direction: Along the trail to Aleko Hut, then branching off towards the northern slopes.
- Duration: Approximately 1.5–2 hours one way, depending on your pace.
- Terrain: Mixed – forest paths, meadows, and slightly rocky sections.
The trail is pleasant, with a gentle ascent and numerous spots for short breaks. And the best part is that you gradually enter the quieter part of Vitosha, away from the more popular routes.

What not to miss
The Lakes Themselves: They are several small water mirrors, located among grassy meadows. They are at their fullest and most picturesque in spring and early summer.
Views of Sofia: From some points along the route, wonderful panoramic views of the city open up – especially in clear weather.
Mountain Silence: This is one of the places where you can hear your own thoughts. Ideal for people looking for tranquility.
Flora and Fauna: The area is rich in herbs, wildflowers, and birds. If you have an eye for detail, you will discover many small natural wonders.
Fun fact
The Simeonovo Lakes are often called "Vitosha's miniature Rila Lakes." Although much smaller, they possess the same charm—a group of small bodies of water, arranged like natural pearls in the mountain.
