Solar Gate

The Sun Gate, located on a hill near the village of Buzovgrad, is an ancient sanctuary that seems to reveal the ancient secrets of the stars and the sun. Since prehistoric times, people have used this place to worship the sky, time, and the cycle of the seasons. Whether you are seeking a historical enigma or simply want to enjoy the magnificent view, the Sun Gate promises a unique experience.
Where is it located
The Sun Gate is located just about 3 km from Buzovgrad village, which is near the town of Kazanlak. If you are traveling by car, from the center of Buzovgrad, follow the signs and you will reach a parking lot, from where a short walking path leads to the sanctuary itself. The path is well-marked, with gentle ascents and surprisingly picturesque views. If you are a fan of mountain hikes, there is also a slightly longer route from Kazanlak, which adds a bit more adventure to the visit.
How long does it take
A typical route takes about 2 hours, including time for photos and enjoying nature. If you decide to sit and simply soak in the energy of the place, you might spend even more time – you won't even notice the hours flying by! For picnic lovers, there are plenty of resting spots among the trees, so you can plan a slightly longer stay.
What not to miss
First and foremost, do not miss passing through the "gate" itself – a large monolithic stone with an opening that seemingly "catches" the sun during the equinox. The golden evening light gives the impression that the sun itself "enters" through this ancient arch. Furthermore, there are other interesting rocks and indentations carved by human hands in the vicinity, suggesting the ritual and astronomical function of the place. Also, note the surrounding landscape – your gaze will extend over the Rose Valley and the winding Tundzha River.
Fun fact
Legend has it that people once gathered at this place for special ceremonies, and ancient Thracian priests performed rituals in honor of the sun god. It is believed that every year on a certain day, the sun aligns directly above the entrance and "opens a gate" to an unseen world. Some visitors believe that if you concentrate and make a wish while passing through the "gate," your wish will come true!
