Smolyan Lakes

Welcome to the mystical world of the Smolyan Lakes – one of the most beautiful natural wonders of the Rhodope Mountains! This is a group of glacial lakes, nestled amidst fairytale forests and rocky peaks that seem to emerge from the earth itself. Once over 20 in number, today the Smolyan Lakes have preserved their magic in fewer, but stunningly beautiful bodies of water. A wonderful place for a walk, relaxation, and immersion in the harmony of nature!

Where is it located

The Smolyan Lakes are located in the western part of the Rhodope Mountains, near the town of Smolyan and not far from the Pamporovo resort. They are situated at various altitudes, nestled among the ancient forests of the mountain.

How to get there:

  • By car: From Smolyan, head towards Pamporovo, and from there follow the marked signs for the trails leading to the lakes.
  • On foot: There are eco-trails in the area that allow easy access to most of the lakes, and the hike itself is suitable for beginners and nature lovers.

For those who prefer mountain walks, the lakes are an ideal destination for a day trip with a convenient and pleasant route.

What not to miss

While visiting the Smolyan Lakes, there are several attractions you shouldn't miss:

  • The lakes "Mutnoto" (Murky), "Bistreto" (Clear), and "Trevnoto" (Grassy) – each has its unique atmosphere and incredible views.
  • Views of the Rhodopes – the area is full of panoramic spots that offer unforgettable views of the mountains.
  • Walks along the eco-trails – the routes around the lakes are well-maintained and reveal hidden corners with diverse flora and fauna.

How long does it take?

To see the main lakes, you'll need about 2-3 hours, but if you decide to take a longer walk or visit more of them, it's best to dedicate a whole day. Even just a walk around one or two lakes is worth the effort due to the beautiful scenery.

Fun fact

According to legend, the Smolyan Lakes are home to samodivi (wood nymphs) who come out at night to gaze at their reflection in the waters and bathe under the starlight. Locals say that if you are there at dusk, you might hear a gentle rustling and see shimmering lights above the water – the samodivi are gathering to dance! Just don't leave mirrors or shiny objects nearby – the samodivi believe they steal their beauty.
