Stob Pyramids

Where is it?
The Stob Pyramids are located in Southwestern Bulgaria, at the foothills of the Rila Mountains, very close to the village of Stob. From Sofia, the journey is about 90 kilometers and takes approximately an hour and a half by car – a perfectly achievable day trip! Even if you are wondering whether the short detour from the highway to Rila is worth it – yes, it is!
What not to miss
When you reach the Stob Pyramids, you absolutely must walk along the main path that leads you to the top of the hill, from where the most impressive panorama of the pyramids unfolds. They are interesting not only because of their whimsical shapes, reminiscent of giant mushrooms, chimneys, or even sand castles, but also because of the vibrant colors that vary from yellow to red.
You cannot help but notice the different formations that locals have given playful names to, such as "The Bride" and "The Snake." If you visit the site at sunset, the pyramids appear even more spectacular in the warm colors of the setting sun.
How long does it take
The entire ascent and return along the trail will take you between 1 and 1.5 hours, depending on how often you stop to take pictures or enjoy the views. This is a perfect adventure, even if you are not the most avid hiker, because the route is relatively easy and pleasant.
Fun fact
One of the most interesting legends about the Stob Pyramids is related to the "Bride" formation. Locals believe that the pyramids are actually petrified wedding guests! According to the legend, the groom could not resist the charm of his maid of honor and turned to her during the wedding ceremony – something that, according to custom, was strictly forbidden. At that moment, the entire wedding procession turned to stone as punishment for the transgression, and the pyramids you see today are actually the petrified wedding guests. If you look closely, you might even spot the stone "bride," covered with a veil!
