Tatool

The Tatul Sanctuary is one of the most mystical and impressive places in the Eastern Rhodopes – an ancient cult complex that carries legends of Orpheus and Thracian kings. A visit to it is a true journey back in time, combined with the magic of nature.

🛤 How to get there

The sanctuary is located near the village of Tatul, about 15 km from Momchilgrad and nearly 30 km from Kardzhali. From Momchilgrad, take the road to the village of Raven, then you reach Tatul. The sanctuary itself is just a few hundred meters from the village and is accessible via a well-maintained road. 🚗 By car, the journey from Kardzhali takes about 40 minutes, and from Sofia – approximately 4.5 hours.


🏛 What not to miss

  • The Rock Pyramid – a unique megalithic monument, carved into a monolithic rock, unparalleled in Bulgaria.

  • The two sarcophagi and the altar – evidence of cult practices performed here millennia ago.

  • The well with a depth of 3 meters – probably used for water rituals.

  • Astronomical observations – it is presumed that the site also served for tracking celestial phenomena.

To explore the complex at your leisure, allow about 1–1.5 hours. If you like to immerse yourself in the atmosphere and take photos, it might take even longer.


🌄 Legends and history

The sanctuary is dated from the end of the 5th millennium BC and was actively functioning until the Middle Ages. Some researchers believe that a Thracian ruler was buried here, while others believe it is the sanctuary of Orpheus. In 2011, Tatul was chosen as one of the 10 wonders of Bulgaria.
