Hankrumovo Rock Monastery
Hidden in the heart of the rocky hills of Northeastern Bulgaria, the Khan Krum Rock Monastery is a true treasure of culture and spirituality. Set in a medieval environment, it is surrounded by tranquility and majestic nature that seems to whisper the legends and stories of the past. Where is it?
The Hankrumovo Monastery is located near the village of Han Krum, Shumen Province. To get there, follow the signs for the village, and once you reach the center, you will see signs for the monastery. The terrain in the last part of the route is a bit challenging, so make sure you wear comfortable shoes! If you are traveling by car, be aware that the last 200-300 meters may need to be covered on foot along a rocky path.
What shouldn't we miss?
Don't miss entering the rock niches themselves – the cells carved into the stone that once housed the monks. The view from there is amazing – the entire surroundings can be seen! Also, enter the main hall of the monastery, where the walls still bear traces of frescoes. Also, note the rock inscriptions, which according to scholars date back to the First Bulgarian Empire – a unique experience for history lovers!
How long does it take
A complete tour of the monastery takes about 1-2 hours, depending on how much time you want to spend in each part of the rock niches and cells. If you are a photographer or a lover of tranquility, we recommend you set aside extra time for photos and rest to fully experience the charm of the place.
Fun fact
Legend has it that the place was a refuge for soldiers from the time of Khan Krum. One of the traditions says that at night one can still hear the whispers of monks guarding ancient scriptures in the monastery. Locals believe that if you listen carefully, you can hear faint footsteps and whispers in the rocks – a sure sign that the spirits of the monks are there to remind us of the history and tradition of Bulgaria.
