Pchelina Dam

Where is it?

Pchelina Dam is located about 60 km southwest of Sofia. You head towards Pernik, pass through Radomir and turn right towards the village of Priboy, and then towards the village of Potsarnentsi. I recommend setting "St. Yoan Letni Chapel" as your location in Google Maps to avoid getting lost. At the end of Potsarnentsi village there is a parking lot on the right, but you can continue a little further up with your car, where the last houses are located. You'll know you've reached them when you see a sign for horse riding next to the church. The walk to the final destination takes approximately 30 minutes. If your car is an off-road vehicle, you can drive it all the way to the church itself.

What not to miss

While enjoying the tranquility of Pchelina Dam, there are a few remarkable things you shouldn't miss:

  • "St. John of Summer" Church – a small medieval church nestled on a hill overlooking the dam. It is famous for its old frescoes and impressive panorama.
  • Fishing – if you're a fishing enthusiast, the dam is a paradise for this hobby! Locals love to tell stories about the huge carp that swim here.
  • Picnic by the shore – there are ideal picnic spots by the dam. Pack a basket with goodies and enjoy the fresh air and nature around you.

Legend has it that once upon a time, there was a village where Pchelina Dam now stands, which was abandoned after a mysterious series of strange events. The villagers believed that the lake that formed the site was enchanted. Today, however, the only magic you will feel here is the incredible silence and natural beauty.
