Yaylata

How to get there:
Yailata is located about 2 km from the village of Kamen Bryag and 18 km from Kavarna. The most convenient way to reach it is by car – the road is well-maintained, and there is parking at the entrance to the reserve. From there, a marked trail leads to the main sites. The area is accessible year-round, but it is most beautiful in spring and early summer when the steppes are covered with wild flowers.

How much time to set aside:
To fully explore the reserve, you will need between 1.5 and 3 hours, depending on your pace and interests. If you enjoy photography or want to explore every cave and ruin, you might stay longer.

What not to miss:
Yailata is a vast terrace above the sea, cut by caves, rock niches, and ancient traces of human presence. The most interesting places include:

– The Cave "City" – over 100 cave dwellings carved into the rocks as early as the 5th century BC. Some of them were also used in the Middle Ages as monastic cells.
– The Early Byzantine Fortress – remains of a 5th–6th-century fortress, located in the northern part of the reserve. Partially preserved are the walls, towers, and main gate.
– Rock Sanctuaries and Altars – ancient cult sites associated with Thracian rituals.
– Incredible Sea Views – the sheer cliffs, crashing waves, and endless horizon create a sense of freedom and grandeur.
– Rich Wildlife – the area is part of the Via Pontica migration route and is a great place for birdwatching.

Practical tips:
Wear comfortable shoes – the terrain is rocky and uneven.
Bring water and a hat, as there is no shade.
The wind is often strong, so it's a good idea to have an outer layer.
Be careful near the cliff edges – some sections are steep.
The place is suitable for children, but under supervision.

A few kilometers away is Cape Kaliakra – one of the most iconic landmarks on the northern Black Sea coast, known for legends, fortress walls, and dramatic cliffs.
