Hidden in the heart of Rila Mountain, Bistrishki Waterfall is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places for a walk and relaxation near Dupnitsa. It impresses with its pure mountain water, greenery, and seclusion, making it a perfect destination for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts.

 

 

How to Get to the Waterfall

The most convenient route starts from the town of Dupnitsa. From there, follow the road to the village of Bistritsa, located at the foot of Rila. A marked hiking trail begins from the village, leading directly to the waterfall. The path is relatively easy and suitable for family walks; a wooden staircase or bridges are installed in steeper sections to facilitate passage.

If traveling by car, you can leave your vehicle at the end of the village and continue on foot. The path is well-marked, and the walk from the village to the waterfall takes about 60-90 minutes one way.

What Not to Miss

  • The Main Waterfall – the falling water is about 15–20 meters high and creates an impressive mist and coolness, especially during the summer months.

  • Small Water Cascades – on the way to the main waterfall, you will discover a series of smaller cascades, perfect for photos and a short break.

  • Nature around the River – ancient trees, ferns, and many flowers grow around, and the path passes by crystal clear mountain streams.

  • Local Rest Areas – there are several wooden gazebos and benches along the path where you can enjoy a picnic or simply relax in nature.

How Much Time You'll Need

For a complete experience, we recommend setting aside about 3–4 hours. This includes the walk to the waterfall, rest and photos, as well as a short walk around the small cascades. If you want to enjoy a picnic or a longer stay, you can plan for half a day.

  • Dupnitsa – the town offers restaurants with traditional Bulgarian cuisine, cafes, and markets for local products.

  • The Seven Rila Lakes – another natural wonder nearby, which you can combine with a visit to the waterfall if you plan a full-day hike in Rila.
