God's eyes
Welcome to Prohodna Cave - one of Bulgaria's most magical natural wonders! Have you ever dreamed of seeing the sky through the "eyes of God"? Here, it's possible! Prohodna is known not only for its majestic beauty but also for its two enormous openings in the ceiling, which locals call "God's Eyes." Are you ready for a magical adventure?
Where is it located
Prohodna Cave is located in the area of Karlukovo village, about a 2-hour drive northeast of Sofia. The cave is part of the "Iskar-Panega" Geopark and is relatively easily accessible, even for beginner cavers and nature lovers. The most convenient way to travel is by car – by following the road to Lukovit. You can't go wrong, as there are signs along the way that will guide you directly to this remarkable place.
What not to miss
The most remarkable part of the cave is, of course, the "Eyes of God" – these two huge openings that form in the cave ceiling and seem to watch everything around them. This is not just a natural phenomenon – the sight has an almost mystical effect on anyone who sees them. Daylight filters through these openings, creating a unique atmosphere. So don't forget to bring a camera or at least a phone with a good camera, because here every photo looks like magic!
If you are a fan of extreme experiences, the cave is also a popular spot for bungee jumping. Imagine jumping right into the heart of this natural cathedral! Even if you don't jump, the mere sight will make you feel the adrenaline.
If you continue along the path past the cave, after about 20 minutes of walking you will reach the Rock Monastery "Sveta Marina".
How long does it take
The walk through the cave itself will not take you more than an hour, especially if you are here just for sightseeing. But if you plan to take photos or walk to the rock monastery, set aside at least two hours. If you decide to try bungee jumping, you will need a little more time for preparation and a bit of nerve.
Fun fact
One of the most amusing legends surrounding God's Eyes is that these openings don't just observe but "see" everything that happens in the cave. According to a local legend, if you stand beneath them and make a wish, the "eyes" can discern if your wish is sincere and, if it is, might even grant it. So, why not try? Stand beneath them, look up, and make a heartfelt wish!
