Banderishki Lake
Banderishko Lake, also known as Ribno Banderishko Lake (Fish Banderishko Lake), is the largest of the Banderishki Lakes and one of the most picturesque in the Pirin Mountains. It is located at an altitude of 2190 meters in the Banderishki Circus, at the foot of the imposing Vihren, Todorka, and Banderishki Chukar peaks. The lake covers an area of about 6.5 hectares and reaches a depth of up to 12 meters – sufficient to sustain a population of Balkan trout. Although it is named "Ribno" (Fish), fishing is prohibited as the lake falls within the territory of Pirin National Park and is protected under Natura 2000. The mirror-like surface of the water, surrounded by rocks and dwarf pines, makes the place a preferred stop for relaxation and photography.
How to get there
The starting point for the visit is Vihren Hut, which is located about 16 km from the town of Bansko. The hut is accessible by an asphalt road that is open to cars, but during the summer season (July–September) there are often temporary traffic restrictions between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM, for the purpose of controlling vehicle traffic.
Route
From the hut, head west, following the blue hiking markers, and almost immediately turn left onto a path that gently ascends and runs parallel to the mountain river. After about 500 meters, you will reach a small wooden bridge on the left – cross it.
From here on, the markers are green, and the route continues in a southeast direction. After another 800–1000 meters, the path forks – the main path leads to the high peaks, but you should take the right fork. Only a few minutes of easy walking remain and… the fairytale view of Ribno Banderishko Lake will unfold before your eyes.
👉 The total length of the route is about 3 kilometers one way, with an elevation gain of 200 meters. It usually takes approximately an hour and a half to complete, depending on your pace and the number of stops for photos, exclamations, and admiration.
What not to miss
The view from the small peninsula – the western part of the lake forms a picturesque peninsula, overgrown with dwarf pine. This is a great place for a picnic, photos, or simply contemplating the water and the surrounding peaks.
Photographing reflections – in calm weather, the peaks of Vihren and Todorka are clearly reflected in the lake, creating ideal conditions for landscape photography.
Spring flower spectacle – in June and July, mountain flowers and herbs, including edelweiss and rhododendron, bloom around the lake.
Continuing the route – if you have more time, from the lake you can continue to Muratovo Lake, Dalgoto Lake, Zhabeshkoto Lake, or even join a circular route around the Banderishki Lakes. The trails are unmarked but well-trodden, often marked with stone cairns.

Fun fact or legend
According to tradition, a water spirit lived in the waters of Lake Banderishki, appearing at full moon and driving away intruders, but bestowing good fortune on those who love nature. Locals say that if you throw a pebble into the water and make a sincere wish, the spirit might grant it. The legend reminds us of the connection between humans and the mountain – based on respect and balance.
