"Kupena – Sarnitsa" Eco-trail

The "Kupena – Sarnitsa" Eco-trail is located in Mineralni Bani Municipality, Haskovo District — the Rhodope Mountains. It is approximately 4.75 km long and passes through forest paths and old forest roads, with the last few meters leading to the historical rock and the remains of the "Kupena" fortress. The trail is suitable for an easy to moderate hike and takes approximately 2–3 hours if you stop for sightseeing, photos, and rest.

From the village of Sarnitsa, take a forest road that, after about a 15–20 minute walk, will lead you to the beginning of the marked trail. The route passes through quiet Rhodope forests, and the destination is the "Kupen Kaya" rock, where impressive panoramic views of the valleys and surrounding peaks can be seen.

What not to miss

  • "Kupen Kaya" Rock — a steep rock face offering a magnificent view of the mountain.
  • The remains of the ancient "Kupena" Fortress — a Thracian and medieval fortification, located at an altitude of 683 m.
  • The nature along the trail — mixed forest, opportunities for photoshoots, and a tranquility rarely found near populated areas.

How to get there

Reach the village of Sarnitsa via an asphalt road, then leave your car in the village and take the forest road to the beginning of the eco-trail. The last few meters are along a marked trail — comfortable shoes are recommended.

Bring comfortable shoes, water, sun protection, and a good mood. Summer and early autumn are the most suitable times, and during rainy periods, the trail can be more challenging — check the weather forecast and prepare accordingly.
