The Stone Mushrooms – a natural phenomenon you must see

The Stone Mushrooms are unique rock formations located about 1 km north of the village of Beli Plast, right next to the road between Haskovo and Kardzhali. They are part of a protected natural area covering about 3 hectares, declared a natural landmark in 1974.

The rocks have a characteristic mushroom shape – their stems are pink, and their caps are greenish. The height of the "mushrooms" is about 2.5 meters, and the caps are wide – this makes the place extremely photogenic. The shape is the result of ancient volcanic activity – the rocks are rhyolite volcanic tuffs, formed millions of years ago when the area was a seabed. After the sea receded, erosion by wind, rain, and sun carved these fantastic shapes.

Visiting is easy: if you are travelling from Haskovo to Kardzhali, look for the sign to Beli Plast village; from the village to the mushrooms it's about 1 km. It's advisable to wear comfortable shoes because the terrain has a light limestone dust – but the path is almost flat, and viewing the mushrooms takes no more than 20-30 minutes.

Don't miss exploring the surrounding area – not far away is the famous rock city of Perperikon (about 15 km), which offers ancient history and archaeology. Also, in the vicinity, there are rock phenomena such as the Stone Wedding near Zimzelen village and other interesting formations that complement the experience of nature and history in the Eastern Rhodopes. If you want to immerse yourself in the local spirit – the city of Kardzhali is a suitable place for relaxation, dining, and sightseeing.

The Stone Mushrooms are a great idea for an outing – whether you are in the area or making a special trip – the place is impressive, easily accessible, and offers unique natural views and atmosphere. I recommend dedicating at least an afternoon and a camera – the results will be worth it.
