Karadzhov kamak

🏞 Introduction

Karadzhov Kamuk is a high rock plateau at an altitude of 1448 m, located in the Western Rhodope Mountains, near the village of Mostovo. An enormous boulder is wedged into its sheer walls, as if placed by an invisible force. The place was once a Thracian sanctuary, and according to legends, the crevice beneath the boulder is a "gateway to the afterlife."

 


🚗 How to get there

  • By car: It is most convenient to start from Asenovgrad (about 33 km to Mostovo). From there, the road leads to Krastova Gora, where there is a parking lot.

  • On foot: From Krastova Gora to Karadzhov Kamuk, the hike is about 3.6–4 km, taking 1 hour and 20 minutes one way. The route is well-marked, but the last section – Boaaza – is steep and requires climbing a wooden ladder.


🌟 What not to miss

  • Boaaza – the narrow crevice where the boulder is wedged. Climbing it is a real challenge.

  • The plateau – from the top, panoramic views of the Rhodopes will leave you breathless.

  • The Thracian pits – carved into the rocks, they were used for rituals, likely in honor of the god Dionysus.

  • Legends – according to tradition, once a year people could pass through the crevice and speak with their deceased loved ones.

For the entire hike from Krastova Gora to Karadzhov Kamuk and back, allow about 3 hours, plus time for photos and rest. If you start from Asenovgrad, including travel and the walk, you'll need half a day.
