Where is it?
The starting point for Opaniyat Zyb (Dangerous Tooth) is in the town of Teteven, right next to the bus station. From here, an asphalt road begins, which will take you to the "Koznitsa" tourist hut. After passing the hut, the road turns into a dirt track and leads to a spring fountain – a great place to refresh yourself and prepare for the uphill hike. Shortly before the fountain, you will notice signs directing you to "Opaniyat Zyb" itself. Follow them, and you will soon reach one of the most captivating views in the area!
What not to miss
As you ascend, be sure to stop for a rest at a few strategic spots where nature reveals itself in its full glory. At the very top, you'll find the "tooth" – a sharp rock formation that resembles a giant predatory tooth, pointing towards the sky.
From here, you can see the entire Teteven valley and many neighboring peaks – all enveloped in silence and freshness.
How long does it take
The hike to Opasiyat Zab usually takes about 2 to 3 hours one way, depending on your pace and the number of breaks. If you're planning a picnic at the top or want to stay longer to enjoy the views and take photos, set aside half a day. It's important to wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and be prepared for various conditions – mountain weather can be unpredictable!
Fun fact
Local people tell a legend about a giant dragon that guarded the region and hid in the rocks near Teteven. According to tradition, this dragon left a "tooth" as a trace of its presence before disappearing into the mountain forever. Now, Opasiyat Zŭb (The Striped Tooth) stands as a symbol of the power and unsolved mysteries of the Balkan Mountains - a reminder that nature always has its secrets.
