Garlo Well-Temple
Are you ready to dive into the world of ancient mysticism and secrets? The Garlo well-temple is one of the most mysterious and impressive Thracian sanctuaries in Bulgaria, its origins shrouded in enigma. This architectural structure resembles a scene from an adventure film – a secret well, hidden in the mountains, which once served ritualistic purposes. It is believed that this well-temple was created by the Thracians thousands of years ago and symbolizes the connection between water, the sky, and the underworld.
Where is it?
The Well-Temple is located near the village of Garlo, Western Bulgaria. The route starts from the center of the village in the direction of the village of Murtintsi. An alternative starting point is from the cemetery of Garlo, heading towards the dam. After about 200-300 meters from the village in the direction of Murtintsi, you will turn right onto a dirt road. Here begins a gentle ascent, and after about an hour you will reach a small parking area in the forest at a fork. A hunting shelter is located 100 meters to the left, but you need to go right.
After about 10-15 minutes, you will pass by the remains of the Kula fortress, where the road will turn left and begin to descend. Next is a fork with a sign, where you take the right road. After another right turn, in just ten minutes you will reach the Well-Temple.
What shouldn't we miss?
Once you reach the well, the first thing that will amaze you is its unique architecture. The structure is built in the shape of an inverted cone, with the stone blocks arranged to reflect light in an impressive way. Don't forget to look up through the well's opening – you'll feel as if you're looking directly at the sky. Additionally, around the temple there are many stones that, according to some archaeologists, were used for ancient astronomical observations. This place truly combines natural beauty and historical heritage.
How long does it take
The tour of the Wonderful Rocks takes between 1 and 2 hours, depending on your pace and how much time you spend taking photos. The place is relatively compact, so there is no need to plan a whole day for a visit. However, if you have time, you can also enjoy a walk along the shores of Lake Varna – just gather your strength for another short walk if nature recharges you.
How long does it take?
A visit to the Well-Temple will take you about 1-2 hours, depending on how much time you dedicate to walking and exploring. The walk from the village to the sanctuary itself is about 30 minutes one way, so allow time for that as well. If you are a history buff and want to feel the energy of the place, you might want to stay longer and enjoy the peace and quiet.
Fun fact
According to one legend, the well was used for moon-related rituals. On certain nights, when the moon was directly above the well's opening, its light would reflect in the water at the bottom, and this was considered a moment of divine enlightenment. The ancient Thracians believed this was the way to communicate with the gods. Sounds almost like a scene from mythology, doesn't it?
Whether you are a history buff or just looking for a secluded spot, the Garlo Temple-Well will enchant you with its magical atmosphere!
