Hawk-eye

Eagle's Eye is one of the most impressive places in the Rhodopes – a panoramic platform offering a view as if you are on the wings of an eagle. If you are looking for an adventure combined with beauty and adrenaline, this is your destination.

🏔 Introduction

"Eagle's Eye" is a unique glass platform, built in 2009 on St. Ilia Peak in the Western Rhodopes. It is located at an altitude of 1563 meters above sea level and literally "hangs" over the Buynovo Gorge. From here, views open up to the villages of Yagodina, Borino, and Chala, and in the distance, peaks from Pirin, Rila, and even mountains in Greece can be seen.

🚶 How to get there

The platform can be reached in two ways:

  • On foot – from the Yagodina Cave, a marked trail about 2 km long begins. The hike takes about 60 minutes and has an elevation gain of 330 meters.

  • By jeep – local guides offer ascents with an off-road vehicle, which is a real adventure on the steep mountain roads.

It is important to keep in mind that the peak is named after St. Ilia – the lord of thunder. In bad weather, the place is dangerous due to frequent lightning, so plan your visit with a stable forecast.

🌄 What not to miss

  • The platform itself – the transparent floor and the sheer drop beneath your feet will make you feel adrenaline, but also incredible freedom.

  • Buynovo Gorge – the longest gorge in Bulgaria, cut by the Buynovska River.

  • Yagodina Cave – one of the most beautiful caves in Bulgaria, known for its unique stalactites and stalagmites.

⏱ How much time to allocate

If you start on foot from Yagodina Cave, the entire hike up and down will take you about 2-3 hours. If you use a jeep, you will save time and effort, but you will miss the pleasure of walking in the mountains.

🗺 Interesting places nearby

  • Devil's Throat Cave – another impressive cave in the area, associated with the legend of Orpheus.

  • Orpheus Rocks – a mystical place named after the mythical singer.

  • Pamporovo – a popular resort, suitable for winter sports and summer walks.

🍴 Where to eat

In the area of Yagodina and Trigrad, you will find small family taverns offering traditional Rhodope dishes – kachamak, patatnik, klin, and homemade pastries. This is a great opportunity to combine your nature adventure with culinary delight.

✅ Useful tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes and an outer layer – the weather in the mountains changes quickly.

  • If you have a fear of heights, be prepared – the platform is transparent and the feeling is intense.

  • It is best to visit the place in the morning hours when the light is soft and the views are most impressive.
